MURFREESBORO, NC - Fayetteville State opened conference play on a positive note Thursday evening with a 52-37 triumph over Chowan at The Helms Center. The duo of Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) and Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) combined for 34 points as the Lady Broncos improve to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in league action. Hanzer finished with a game-high 18 points while Ashford added 16. FSU led at intermission 31-15.
Hanzer and Ashford finished with identical 6-of-11 shooting as FSU held the Hawks to its second-lowest point total this season.
Talaya Lynch led Chowan (0-10, 0-2) on offense with 15 points and was the only Hawk to finish in double-figures. No other Chowan player scored more than five points.
The Lady Broncos held the Hawks to 5-of-26 (19.2%) shooting in the first half. FSU shot 46.2% (12-of-26) overall as it led by as much as 18 points at 29-11. Hanzer paced the Fayetteville State offense in the first half with 11 points.
Ashford extended Fayetteville State's lead to a game-high 21 points on a layup with 6:26 left in the game. The reigning CIAA Newcomer of the Week had ten points in the second half after going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
FSU finished the contest with a 35.8% (19-of-53) shooting percentage and led 18-8 in points in the paint. Chowan shot 22.9% (11-of-48) as a team.
Fayetteville State will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5 as it travels to Petersburg, VA to take on Virginia State at Daniel Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
