Gilbert Abraham brings a wealth of basketball experience with him to the Fayetteville State women's basketball staff. A 2004 graduate of St. Andrews Presybterian College - where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics -- Abraham has coached basketball in North Carolina for nearly 10 years. In 2005, Abraham was as a social studies teacher, J.V. basketball head coach and assistant varsity coach at Scotland County High School in Laurinburg, N.C. Abraham's duties included developing a practice schedule and working with varsity players on shooting techniques. In 2007-08, Abraham helped lead Scotland to a 21-4 record and an appearance in the state 4-A playoffs. In May, Abraham received his master of public administration degree from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Abraham is also familiar with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball circuit, a critical part of recruiting for most colleges and universities. Starting in March 2006, Abraham founded and coached the Scotland Warriors Achieving Triumph (SWAT) AAU program. In the program, Abraham coached players ages 13 to 17. His teams compiled a 125-45 record and competed on a national stage. Most recently Abraham served as Director of Player Development for the Angel Elite Sports Basketball program. Angel Elite Sports is a non-profit, athletic-based organization committed to creating opportunities for young student-athletes based in Pembroke, N.C. Angel Elite Sports promotes character development, cultural awareness and academic success, while providing opportunities for community service and personal growth through participation in team and individual sports on the national, state and local stage. Born in Bonn, Germany and of Nigerian descent, Abraham's family settled in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. At Laurel Hill High School, Abraham helped Laurel finished fourth in the state in 2000.During his senior year at St. Andrews College, he was awarded the "Most Coachable Award," and received the senior superlative "Most likely to Succeed." Away from the basketball court, Abraham enjoys public speaking, poetry and community service. |
