PETERSBURG, VA - Spencer Goodnough (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) fired an opening round 77 (+5) on Monday morning as the Fayetteville State men's golf team finished the first round of the Virginia State University Fall Classic in second place. The two-day event is being held at the par 72, 6,605 yard Dogwood Trace Golf Club.

The Broncos trail first-round leader Savannah State by 15 strokes as the Tigers posted a 299 to open competition. A total of six strokes separate positions two through five on the leader board as host Virginia State is in third place after shooting a 317. Saint Augustine's shot a 319 and is currently in fourth place, while North Carolina Central is in fifth with a 320. Virginia Union holds sixth place in the standings with a 325. Chowan (7th, 348) and Elizabeth City State (8th, 378) are in seventh and eighth places, respectively.

Goodnough's opening round score is tops on the team heading into the second, and final, round. Jacob Barge (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) posted the second-highest score for Fayetteville State with a 6-over 78, and Brandon Jobe (So., Fayetteville, NC) is right behind him with a seven-over 79. Michael Wallace (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) is fourth among FSU golfers after shooting an 80 (+8) in the first round, and Justin Smith (Fr., Lillington, NC) is fifth with a 13-over 85.

The Broncos will conclude play at the Virginia State University Fall Classic on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8 a.m.
