FAYETTEVILLE STATE GOLF FINISHES FOURTH AT THE 2017 CIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Glen Allen, VA -- The Fayetteville State University men's golf team shot 323 on day one and 327 on day two to finish fourth with a combined score of 650 on the final day of the 2017 CIAA Championships at the par 72, 6,674-yard Crossings Golf Club on April 14th. Sophomore Isaiah Shaw (Altamonte Springs, FL) earned CIAA All-Tournament and All-CIAA First Team honors.

Chowan University overcame a fourth place Round 1 finish to capture their second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Golf Championship Title. The Hawks posted a two-day score of 631 for the second conference title in school history.

In the final round, the Hawks improved to a score of 306 after marking 325 strokes in Round 1. The two-time CIAA Champions held off Virginia Union University by five strokes even though the Panthers seemed to dominate the course. VUU posted a 636 while Livingstone College carded 639 for a third place finish.

Jordan Francis of Chowan received the low medalist award of the championship event. His two-day score of 145 was only one stroke over par, earning a No. 2 CIAA golf season ranking with his 76.5 strokes/round average.

On the All-Tournament team, Francis is joined by Joshua Mohun of Virginia Union and Isaiah Shaw of Fayetteville State, who both swung for a 153 score total. Philip Harrison of Livingstone earned a 154, while Allen Day of Virginia Union posted a stroke total of 155.

Sophomore Christian Villanueva (Fayetteville, NC) completed the event tied for 11th overall. Villanueva shot 80 on day one followed by a second day score of 83 for a total of 163 (+19). Sophomore Adam Capps (Salemburg, NC) fired one shot behind Villanueva with a score of 164 for 13th on the leaderboard.

 

 

Sophomore Nick Pennix (Mebane, NC) had a two-day total of 170 (+26). Junior Austen Parlett (Hope Mills, NC) placed 34th overall with a total score of 196 (103, 93). Parlett improved by 10 strokes on the second day of competition.

Fayetteville State men's golf will travel to Port St. Lucie, FL for the 31st annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships. Competition will begin on Friday, May 12th at the PGA Golf Club and conclude on Sunday, May 14th. The Broncos placed fourth at the event last season. FSU won their last PGA Minority Championship in 2012.
