CLAYTON, NC - The Fayetteville State men's golf team captured its first team title of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday afternoon by winning the CIAA Southern Division Tournament. The event was held at the par 71, 6508-yard Pine Hollow Golf Club. Jacob Barge (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) won the Individual Low-Medal Award after finishing with a score of 144 (+2). The Broncos also had three golfers finish inside the top five.
Barge posted a second round score of 73 (+2) to follow his 71 on the opening day. Jacob knocked down seven birdies for the event. Although the weather stretched out play on the final day, Barge found three birdies on his back nine to secure his spot at the top of the leader board. Jacob Barge represented FSU at the NCAA Nationals last season.
Justin Smith (Fr., Lillington, NC) earned a second place finish after firing a 148 (+6) while Brandon Jobe (So., Fayetteville, NC) placed fourth with a 150 (+8). Antonio Mayo (So., Jacksonville, NC) and Jake Bergman rounded out the individual competition for Fayetteville State. Mayo finished 32nd with a 199 (+57) and Bergman tied for 33rd with Stephen Velasquez of Virginia Union after carding a 200 (+58).
The Broncos concluded the two-day event with a team score of 632 (+64); FSU shot a 312 in the first round and 320 in round two. Fayetteville State won the tournament by just three strokes over Virginia State who finished with a 635 (+67). Virginia Union was behind Virginia State in third place with a 637 (+69). Chowan's 643 (+75) earned it a fourth place finish. Saint Augustine's placed fifth with 666 (+98) and Johnson C. Smith was sixth at 701 (+133). Livingstone and Elizabeth City State rounded out the final standings in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Livingstone recorded a team score of 783 (+215) and Elizabeth City State followed with a 790 (+222).
FSU will return to action next week at the CIAA Northern Division Tournament. The tournament will take place Mar. 18-19.
