CLAYTON, NC – The Fayetteville State men’s golf team is currently in second place after round one of the CIAA Southern Division Tournament held at the par-71 Pine Hollow Golf Club. The Broncos shot a first round score of 312 and are ten shots back of leader Virginia Union. Jacob Barge (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) leads Fayetteville State following day one after shooting a first round 71 (E).

Barge’s 71 is tied for the lowest score of the tournament thus far with Virginia Union’s Mason Simpson. Brandon Jobe (So., Fayetteville, NC) posted a 72 (+1) in the opening round while Justin Smith (Fr., Lillington, NC) finished with a score of 75 (+4). Jake Bergman and Antonio Mayo (So., Jacksonville, NC) closed out the first round of competition for Fayetteville State. Bergman carded a 94 (+23) and Mayo ended his day with a 103 (+32).

Virginia Union finished with a first day score of 302 led by Simpson’s 71. Virginia State is third behind FSU with a 325 followed by Chowan in fourth at 328. Saint Augustine’s currently ranks fifth with a score of 331 and Johnson C. Smith is sixth with a 356. Livingstone and Elizabeth City State round out the team competition in seventh and eighth places, respectively. Livingstone opened with a round of 375 and Elizabeth City State at 412.

The final round of the CIAA Southern Division Tournament is set for Tuesday, Mar. 12. Participants are set to tee off beginning at 8 a.m.
