FAYETTEVILLE STATE GOLF FINISHES 17TH IN THE NATION

The Fayetteville State Men's Golf team put an exclamation point behind the "Best Season Ever!" The Broncos finished the 2009 season as one of the top 20 teams in NCAA Division II. FSU shot a 106 over par 1242, for 17th place, during the four-round NCAA National Tournament. Senior Derek Scott (Hope Mills, NC) finished within the top 50 with a total score of 303 (+19); tied at 47th. Twenty teams and 108 individuals participated in the event hosted by Western Washington University at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, WA. [+]

5/20/09 - Men's Golf

FAYETTEVILLE STATE HAS A HIGH 1ST ROUND OF GOLF AT THE NCAA NATIONALS

Fayetteville State currently sits in the 16th position after the first round of golf at the NCAA DII National Tournament. The Broncos combined for a total score of 311; which is 27 strokes over par. In a field of 108 golfers, Derek Scott leads the team with a 74, three-over par. Eighteen golfers are within three shots of the lead; 27 are within four strokes. Gene Webster of Cal State University San Bernardino shot a 1-under par 71 to take a one shot lead over the field. Barry and Sonoma State are tied for the team lead at 9-over par 293. Northeastern State, Okla., is third at 294. "We didn't play a bad round of golf," explains head coach Raymond McDougal on the Broncos performance, "yes we shot a 311 but, at the NCAA Super Regionals, we shot 304, 309, and 305. We were due for a high round. Now that it is out of our system, we should bounce back and be in the hunt." [+]

FAYETTEVILLE STATE IS SET TO MAKE HISTORY WITH FIRST EVER TRIP TO NCAA GOLF NATIONALS

Fayetteville State University has a celebrated golf program with many accolades. The Broncos have competed regionally and amongst the East coast. On May 16th, the golf team will depart campus for its first-ever National Championship Tournament and be the first HBCU in 35 years to qualify. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began the Division II Golf Championships in 1963. In 1965, Lincoln University of Missouri was the first HBCU to qualify and finished fifth. Chicago State qualified in 1974 and finished 31st. Western Washington University, of Blaine, WA, will host the Finals at the Loomis Trail Golf Club from the 19th through the 22nd. [+]
