SAVANNAH, Ga. - Once again, it appears the Fayetteville State golf team will be a CIAA championship contender.

One of the most successful programs in Fayetteville State history, the Broncos picked up their second tournament victory of the 2011-12 season, winning the Division-II Savannah State Tiger Fall Invitational last weekend.

Led by Jake Barge, who placed first among Division-II players and tied for second in the overall field, which included several Division-1 teams, the Broncos clipped CIAA foe Virginia State by five shots to claim the championship at the 6,748-yard, par-72 Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, Ga.

Barge carded rounds of 75 and 72 for a two-day total of 3-over-par 147, putting him into a playoff with two Bethune-Cookman golfers, Joseph Molina and Emanuel Petrich. Molina won the playoff.

Fayetteville State played the tournament in rounds of 315 and 324 for an aggregate of 639, topping Virginia State's 344. The Trojans are the defending CIAA champions.

The Broncos also got a 13th-place overall finish from Clayton Wood (76-80-156) and a 16th-place overall finish from Lincoln Jackson (75-83-158). Mike Wallace (89-89-178) rounded out the Fayetteville State scoring.

Winston-Salem State, another CIAA foe, finished third in the D-II standings.

Bethune-Cookman won the Division-1 tournament.

Fayetteville State, one of the elite programs in NCAA Division-II history, won its first tournament of the season last month, the Trojan Fall Classic, hosted by Virginia State.
