WINSTON-SALEM - Longtime Fayetteville State offensive coordinator Connell Maynor, a veteran with more than 20 years of football experience both as a player and coach, was introduced as the ninth head football coach at Winston-Salem State University on Tuesday. A former standout at both WSSU and North Carolina A&T State University, Maynor also coached quarterbacks for the Broncos. "This is a great opportunity for him," FSU head coach Kenny Phillips said. "In his first 10 days, when he sits behind the big desk, it's a different animal. I told him to call me if he had any questions about anything." Maynor's offensive units at FSU produced two All-CIAA quarterback selections (2002 and 2003) and ranked first in the CIAA in rushing offense, total offense and scoring in 2008. The Broncos' offense in 2008 was 13th in the country in points per game. This will be Maynor's first head coaching job. "I was never a head coach until I took the head job here in 2000," said Phillips who has won 64 games in 10 seasons at FSU. "Coach Maynor will do a very good job over there in that they've given him a chance to be a head football coach. He's been around a football a long time." Phillips said he hasn't set a time-table for finding Maynor's replacement. "In this profession it isn't long before you'll get 100 resumes," Phillips said. "I'm not going to rush to do anything right now. I'm just going to go back and sift through some people I know. We'll get a good coach hired." While neither FSU nor WSSU has released its 2010 schedule, the schools could meet in the fall. The Rams will rejoin the CIAA next season. "It's all good for him," said Phillips. I told Coach Maynor `now you know you're on the other sideline right?' This is a great opportunity for his family and I wish him the best in all nine games that he plays next year."
