FAYETTEVILLE - The Fayetteville State University community will honor its CIAA Championship football team from 3 to 5 p.m. today on the FSU campus.
FSU, who made the NCAA Division II playoffs for the third time this season, won the school's third CIAA Championship with a 21-10 win over Bowie State on Nov. 7. "We brought home a CIAA Championship and got an invite to the NCAA Playoffs," FSU Athletics Director Dr. Edward McLean said. "That was really good for us and is going to help us down the road with recruiting." The celebration will take place at Gazebo Commons on FSU's East Campus. The Bronco Express Marching band and the FSU Cheerleaders (better known as "Cheer Phi Smoov") will be in attendance as well FSU coaches and players. Fans can also get autographs from players and coaches. Over the last two seasons, FSU compiled a 16-6 record and a .727 winning percentage. The only two-year winning percentage better is a .785 percentage (11-3-1) from 1975-76. Kenny Phillips, FSU's head coach, was named CIAA Coach of the Year while Austin Turner, the Broncos' kicker, was named CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year. After the celebrations, the FSU women's basketball team will face Barton College inside Capel Arena. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
