Jetton and De La Rosa Named CIAA Rookies of the Year

Charlotte, NC (November 9, 2017) – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), in conjunction with its Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association, announced Elvin De La Rosa (Winston-Salem, NC) and Donshel Jetton (Mooresville, NC) as the Defensive and Offensive Rookies of the Year. In total, seven Fayetteville State freshmen were named to the 2017 CIAA All-Rookie Football Teams.

Freshman defensive back Elvin De La Rosa (Parkland High School) has been announced this year's Defensive Rookie of the Year. De La Rosa accounted for 40 total tackles, including 18 solo, for an average 4.0 tackles per game. He recorded one interception and one sack on the season, which assisted in the overall victory over Winston-Salem State University to help FSU advance to the 2017 CIAA Football Championship.

The 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year is running back Donshel Jetton (Mooresville High School). The freshman finished the season with 503 rushing yards; an average of 50.3 rushing yards per game. Jetton has scored six (6) touchdowns overall with a career-long kickoff return of 80 yards.


 

 

Week No. 9 CIAA Linebacker of the Week Keyshawn James (Cayce, SC) will join De La Rosa on the CIAA All-Rookie Defensive Team, along with Nigel Peele (Greensboro, NC) and Brandon Barnes (Charlotte, NC).

James (Brookland-Cayce HS) is the second leading tackler for the Broncos. He had a total of 57 stops (25 assisted and 32 solo tackles) with eight tackles for a loss of 50 yards. He also has one and a half sack for 31 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Peele (Dudley HS) finished the season with 34 tackles in six games played at the linebacker position. He also had two tackles for a loss of 11 yards and one interception for a 25-yard return.

Brandon Barnes (Butler HS) finished the regular season with 27 tackles in the secondary and two interceptions for seven yards.

Jetton is one of three Broncos to be named to the CIAA All-Rookie Offensive Squad.

Starting quarterback Richard Latimer (Charlotte, NC – West Mecklenburg HS) has led the Broncos to five (5) wins when starting. In seven (7) games played, he has thrown 1,074 yards on 83-of-162-9 passes. Latimer averages 153.4 yards per game and has thrown six (6) touchdowns and has rushed for two.

Bruce Davis (Greensboro, NC - Grimsley HS) has nine (9) catches in eight (8) games played for 104 yards. He averaged 11.6 yards per catch and a longest reception of 23 yards.

On Saturday, November 11th the Trojans of Virginia State University will take on the Broncos of Fayetteville State University for the 2017 CIAA Football Championship title. The contest will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET at Salem Stadium in Salem, Virginia. Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster. The game will broadcast live via the ASPiRE TV Network.
