HAMPTON, VA - Fayetteville State running back Andre Montgomery (Fr., Goldsboro, NC) and linebacker Marquel Gathers (Fr., Smithfield, NC) have been recognized by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association on its Football All-Rookie Team for the 2012 season, it was announced today by the league. Montgomery earned CIAA All-Rookie Team Offense honors, while Gathers was selected to the All-Rookie Team Defense. The team is voted on annually by the CIAA Sports Information Directors' Association.
Montgomery finished the season second on the Broncos with 446 yards rushing and one touchdown on 86 carries. He appeared in all 10 games this season for Fayetteville State with five starts. Montgomery averaged 44.6 yards per game while averaging 5.2 yards per carry. He had a long run of 45 yards at Shaw on Oct. 6. Montgomery rushed for a career-high 123 yards on 20 carries at Chowan on Sept. 29 where he averaged 6.2 yards per carry. He recorded his first collegiate rushing touchdown in the Broncos' 28-17 home-opening win over Virginia Union on Sept. 15. The 6-0, 220-pound back also had nine receptions this season for 34 yards and one touchdown. His lone receiving touchdown came in the Shaw contest.
Gathers wrapped up his freshman campaign 11th on the team in tackles with 22 (15 solo, 7 assisted), while contributing one-half sack and 3.5 tackles for loss. He appeared in eight contests with one start in 2012. The 5-11, 240-pound linebacker recorded a career-high six tackles in back-to-back contests against Shaw and Johnson C. Smith. He posted his first career sack in Fayetteville State's 47-29 victory over Livingstone on Oct. 27, and tallied two tackles for loss against the Bears. Livingstone quarterback Drew Powell was named the CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year while Bowie State's Curtis Pumphrey garnered CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
