HAMPTON, Va. - Two days after Fayetteville State clinched a berth in the CIAA Championship game on Nov. 7, Larry McDonald, Richard Medlin, Darius Powell, Greg Summerville and head coach Kenny Phillips received weekly CIAA honors.
McDonald, sophomore from Mebane, N.C., was named the Offensive Linemen of the Week after helping the Broncos rush for 258 yards against St. Augustine's.
FSU offensive linemen have won the award three times this season, including the last two weeks.
Medlin gained 87 yards on only eight carries on his way to being named Offensive Back of the Week. Medlin averaged 10.9 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns in FSU's 56-6 win over St. Augustine's.
Powell filled the stat sheet on Saturday and was named the Defensive Linemen of the Week. Powell had seven tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles and a 12-yard fumble return for a touchdown - all season highs.
"He probably had his best football game of his young career here at Fayetteville State," Phillips said. "He's an unbelievable talent and we need him to continue to play like he played today."
Summerville helped the Broncos' secondary limit SAC to 107 yards passing in FSU's win. Summerville, the Defensive Back of the Week, nabbed two interceptions, including a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.
For the second time in 2009, Phillips was named the Coach of the Week.
Phillips guided FSU to its largest win over SAC. The Broncos' win gave FSU its seventh winning season in 10 years under Phillips and its fourth appearance in the CIAA Championship game since 2002.
After starting 0-2, Phillips and FSU have won six of their last seven games.'
The Broncos close out the regular season at Livingstone on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
