FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State free safety Michael Johnson
(So., Raleigh, NC) has been recognized by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association as its Defensive Back of the Week. Johnson recorded a career-high 19 tackles, 12 solo and seven assisted, in the 35-18 loss to Johnson C. Smith. He recorded an additional two solo and an assisted tackle for a loss of nine yards. Michael Johnson finished the game one tackle shy of tying the school's single-game record. In 1997, Sam Washington had 20 total tackles (12 assisted, 8 unassisted) against Benedict College. Cedric Gordon accomplished the same feat twice; in 1996 against North Carolina Central and in 1993 against Johnson C. Smith.
This season, Johnson leads the Broncos with 66 total tackles, 32 solo and 34 assisted, and is second in interceptions with two. Johnson is averaging over nine tackles per game this season.
Michael Johnson becomes the second Fayetteville State player to be named Player of the Week by the CIAA this season. Linebacker Bryce Williams (Sr., St. Petersburg, FL) was named the CIAA Linebacker of the Week on Sept. 24.
