HAMPTON, Va. - Thanks to their performances in Fayetteville State's 30-20 win over Bowie State, Jeff Gowdy and Austin Turner were honored by the CIAA on Monday.
Turner, a sophomore kicker, was named the CIAA's Speciality Player of the Week for the second time this season after connecting on 3-of-4 field goal attempts against BSU.
A native of San Diego, Turner made a 49-yard field goal - his longest of the season - and punted six times for 230 yards. The 49-yard field goal was the longest in FSU history. The previous record of 47 yards, was shared by John Highsmith and Darrell Armstrong. Of those six punts, Turner knocked three inside the 20-yard line. On the season, Turner has made a CIAA-high seven field goals.
Gowdy intercepted two passes against the Bulldogs en route to being named the CIAA's Defensive Back of the Week. A senior from Jacksonville, N.C., Gowdy also amassed nine tackles in FSU's first win of the season.
Turner, Gowdy and the Broncos will face St. Pauls in Salem, Va., on Saturday, in the 10th annual Western Virginia Education Classic. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
