FSU Broncos Defensive Line Shines in Final Preseason Scrimmage

Aug. 26, 2017

Fayetteville State University held its final inter-squad scrimmage with a meet & greet session, autographs, and photos to wrap-up its preseason activities.

Head Football Coach Richard Hayes was impressed with how his defensive line materialized through camp and performed during the scrimmage.

"This was their first time together," said Coach Hayes. "They came together and showed us why we brought them here. They are going to be a dominant group. Keyshawn James, Jalen Cousar, Jawwad Evans, and Keandre Thompson, that front-four, is going to be something to deal with this year."

Red-shirt senior Keandre Thompson will lead the four horsemen as a 6-3, 245-pound defensive end from Greensboro, NC (Ben L. Smith HS). Jalen Cousar transferred to Bronco Country from South Carolina State. The 6-1, 320-pound defensive tackle hails from Charlotte, NC. Jawwad Evans is another Division-I transfer from Hampton University. The 6-2, 260-pound sophomore defensive tackle is from Durham, NC. Keyshawn James (Cayce, SC) is a 6-3, 270-pound red-shirt freshman who transferred from the Citadel.

"We are still a little young at the linebacker positions," said Coach Hayes. "They are trying to understand the schemes. They are doing a good job! We have another week to prepare."

Questions loomed over who would take the first snap under center since the first week of practice. An answer was provided following the scrimmage.

Transfer graduate-senior from Duke University Kane Banner received the nod for the starting role. Coach Hayes sought after Banner when he was a senior quarterback at St. Paul's High School in Lumberton, NC. While a Blue Devil, Banner (6-4, 223lbs) saw action as a wide receiver on the field.

"He still has the quarterback skill set," stated Hayes. "He still had the tutelage of Coach [David] Cutcliffe.

Returning CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year Stevie Green (6-1, 190lbs, Washington, NC) and freshman Donshell Jetton (5-9, 205lbs, Mooresville, NC) will lead the ground attack.

"The offense is going to be good. The offense is gonna be just fine. Stevie Green is back and all the pieces are in place."

The Broncos will travel to Murfreesboro, September 2nd to avenge a 14-13 loss in last season's opener.
