The CIAA Football Coaches Association has predicted the Fayetteville State Broncos to finish second in the 2014Preseason Poll. The announcement was made today during the conference's media day held at 11:30 am in the Durham Convention Center in Durham, NC. Winston-Salem State, the defending conference champion, was picked as the favorite to win the conference title.
Establishing a new direction for the program last season, FSU exceeded all expectation with a 6-4 record. In conference play, the team also had a successful 5-2 record; missing a berth into the CIAA Championships by one game. The program will return 64 student-athletes who played major roles in developing the Broncos' success.
Marcus Reed (senior - Houston, Texas), picked to the 2014 All-CIAA Offense Team, will solidify the offense as it moves the chains. At 6-5 and 350 pounds, Reed will lead the returning linemen that average 311 pounds. The Broncos averaged 392.8 yards of total offense. The Broncos defense rank second in the CIAA with 74.8 tackles per game. Senior safety Michael Johnson (Raleigh, North Carolina) has a household name; leading the team with 65 tackles. Of the team's 18 interceptions, Johnson leads all with five along with 39 return yards. At the safety position, he had 13 pass deflections.
Fayetteville State led the nation (Division II) in turnover margin (1.9) for the 2013 season. FSU recovered 14 fumbles and recorded 18 interceptions; in contrast, the team only lost three fumbles and threw 10 interceptions.
The 2014 Predicted Order of Finish is as follows:
1. Winston-Salem State
2. Fayetteville State
4. Johnson C. Smith
