FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State free safety Michael Johnson has received his first honor of the 2013 season after being named by Lindy's Sports Magazine to the All-Division II First Team. The national publication releases an annual pre-season and post-season collegiate All-American football team.
Michael Johnson is a rising junior from Cary High School in Raleigh, NC. He led the Fayetteville State defense last season and was fifth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) with 93 tackles (48 solo, 45 assisted) in ten games played.
He also ranked fifth in the conference with four interceptions; and tied for the team lead. He returned one of his picks back for a touchdown. Johnson also contributed five tackles for a loss, an assisted sack, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Michael Johnson was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week following a career-high 19 tackles against Johnson C. Smith; which fell one tackle shy of breaking the school record set in 1997 by Sam Washington.
Johnson is one of two players from the CIAA to be named to the preseason squad. Chowan's defensive lineman T.J. Batchelor also earned All-Division II First Team accolades from the magazine.
The Broncos open the 2013 season on September 7 when the Virginia State Trojans visit Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
