FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State football program will hold its annual "Spring Game" on Saturday, April 13 inside Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. Festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Krispie Kreme Kids Zone; where a play area will be available for children and an obstacle course for adults. The inter-squad scrimmage will begin at 1:00 pm and will be the first spring game under Head Coach Lawrence Kershaw. Admission is free.
The spring game will be the culmination of 13 practices which began on March 25. The Broncos have practiced in full pads four times with Saturday being the fifth. The other days consisted of either helmets or shells (shoulder pads and helmets).
"Our spring has been going really well," said Kershaw. "I am real pleased and happy with what I am seeing. The guys are working extremely hard. We are practicing at a high pace. Our first scrimmage went really well. Usually, you see a lot of penalties such as off-sides and guys lining up wrong. We did not have any of those."
"The surprise right now has been our quarterback play," Kershaw stated. "Our quarterbacks have been playing pretty good; surprisingly better than what I thought. Overall the spring has been going great to be honest. Way better than I expected."
Saturday's scrimmage will feature the offense against the defense; with the offense wearing white and defense in royal blue. There will be four 15-minute quarters with a running clock. Special teams' action will not be live.
Numerous in-game celebrations are slated to be held throughout the Spring Game. Fayetteville State will recognize its women's basketball and women's bowling teams; who both captured the CIAA Southern Division Championship in their respective sport. FSU's cheerleading squad, Cheer Phi Smoov, will be joined by former American Idol contestant David Leathers, Jr. for a special halftime performance.
A Former Football Player Meet & Greet will be held following the game. All former Fayetteville State football players should RSVP with Kevin Wilson, Assistant A.D. for Development/Marketing, by phone at (910) 672-2565 or by e-mail at kwilso10@uncfsu.edu.
The 2013 season officially kicks off on Saturday, September 7; when the Broncos host the Virginia State Trojans in a 6 p.m. contest.
