FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – There is a new wrinkle to Fayetteville State’s 2012 football schedule.
For the first time in four years, the Broncos will not open their new season with the annual Two Rivers Classic, a regional rivalry between Fayetteville State and the UNC Pembroke Braves. In 2012, the fourth annual playing of the popular matchup will take place in Week 2, on Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. at Pembroke.
Instead, Fayetteville State, which released its football schedule on Thursday, will open its season on the road against a familiar foe, former CIAA member and current Division-1 program North Carolina Central, at 6 p.m. on Sept. 1 in Durham.
Following the annual clash at Pembroke, Fayetteville State, which finished the 2011 season having won four of its last six games to finish 4-6 overall and 4-3 in CIAA play, will return home to Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium for two straight games against cross-divisional CIAA opponents in nonconference play.
The Broncos will play Virginia Union at 6 p.m. on Sept. 15 followed by a home date against Elizabeth City State at 6 p.m. on Sept. 22.
Fayetteville State then returns to the road to begin conference action, taking on Northern Division foe Chowan at 6 p.m. on Sept. 29 in Murfreesboro. The Broncos then take on Shaw at 1 p.m. on Oct. 6 in Raleigh.
Fayetteville State is scheduled to return home the following week, Oct. 13, to take on Johnson C. Smith at 6 p.m. before hitting the road for the final time during the regular season at St. Augustine’s for a 2 p.m. kickoff in Raleigh.
The Broncos conclude the season with two of its most anticipated dates. Homecoming will take place on Oct. 27 as Fayetteville State takes on Livingstone at 2 p.m. The Broncos will then close the regular season with perhaps its toughest opponent of the season, 2011 National Semifinalist Winston-Salem State, on Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m. Fayetteville State will also honor its seniors before the game.
The schedule is still subject to change. For information on season tickets for the 2012 football season and how you can help support the Broncos, visit FSUBroncos.com or call (910) 672-1314.
