Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State University head football Coach Kenny Phillips has received his ninth signing class for his upcoming tenth season. Phillips and his coaching staff are very excited about the in-coming recruiting class. On the biggest day of the recruiting season, 13 talented student-athletes have signed to NCAA National Letters of Intent for FSU. Eleven of the initial class of recruits is from the state of North Carolina while two are from out of state. The Bronco staff is still waiting by the fax machine since a snow storm in the Carolinas closed several schools. Marcus Allen, a 6-1, 200-pound running back, from Pine Forest High School has decided to remain in his hometown of Fayetteville. Allen was a bruising tailback and played Outside Linebacker for the first time this past season. On defense, Allen has accumulated 68 total tackles (48 solo and 20 assisted) and had four sacks for a loss of 23 yards. In at least two seasons, Allen had 1,093 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. Last season, he had 352 yards off of 84 carries. The previous year, it was 741 yards from 144 rushes. "I've always known (about the Broncos) since I was a little kid," Marcus Allen said. "The main thing for me is they turned the program around last year and they've been steady building the facilities." - Fayetteville Observer Alexander Anthony, a 6-5, 300-pound offensive linemen, from Hertford County High School in Murfreesboro, NC has been seasoned with success. Anthony has participated in five playoff games in three seasons. The Bears were 10-3 in 2008, 9-4 in 2007, and 12-2 in 2006. Justin Campbell is also an offensive lineman. He stands 6-2 and weighs 285 pounds. Campbell is from Charlotte, NC and played at Victory Christian Center School. He also played on the defensive line. Jeremy Cunningham, a 6-1 235-pound linebacker, will be joining the Broncos in 2009. Cunningham will be transferring from Scottsdale Community College in Casa Grande, AZ. He played high school ball at Casa Grande High School.
Antonio Davis signed his NLI at South Johnston High School. The Four Oaks, NC native is a 5-9 180-pound running back. He rushed for 1,146 yards in 11 games and scored a total of 14 touchdowns. He also had 93 reception yards for one TD. Evan Page, a 6-4 285-pound offensive lineman, will add championship experience to the Broncos. He will be transferring from Harper Junior College in Palatine, IL. Page played at Jacobs High School in Algonquin, Illinois. Harper JC was the 2008 MFC, Region IV, Valley of the Sun Bowl, and NJCAA DIII National Champions. Marquis Hines is a 6-4, 275-pound lineman on the offensive and defensive side from SW Edgecombe High School in Rocky Mount, NC. Robert H. McClure is a 6-4 295-pound offensive lineman from Southern Durham High School in Durham, NC. John Osborne III is a 6-0 180-pound wide receiver and defensive back from Victory Christian Center School in Charlotte, NC. Derrick Redman is a 6-2 285-pound defensive lineman from Fuquay-Varina High School in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Joshua Scales may pan out to be the next starting quarterback for the Broncos. Scales is a 6-0 175-pound athlete who played on both sides of the ball at Pinecrest High School in Pinehurst, North Carolina. In the shared quarterback position for the Patriots last season, Scales completed 28 of 68 passes for 419 yards and two touchdowns. He carried the ball 47 times for 173 yards and two TDs. He made 21 solo and 19 assisted stops for a total of 62 tackles as a defensive back. He pulled down two interceptions for 33 yards Michael Staton is the third student-athlete to sign from Victory Christian Center School in Charlotte, NC. He is a 5-5, 150-pound running back. Anthony J. Williams is a 5-11, 235-pound fullback from Clayton High School in Clayton, NC. The Fayetteville State Broncos (8-2 overall, 6-1 CIAA) were denied a CIAA championship and NCAA playoff appearance based on one loss to Shaw University. Head Coach Kenny Phillips and his staff focused on improving its depth on the offensive and defensive line and increased its fire power in the backfield. Although 13 student-athletes committed before the end of the business day, Phillips expects a dozen more signees before spring practice begins. |
