Two Rivers Classic

Feb. 2, 2009

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University Athletic Department will host a press luncheon on Friday, February 6, 2009 to announce a joint venture with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke on the grid-iron. The press luncheon will be held at 12 noon on the second floor of Docks at the Capital; located in downtown Fayetteville. The media and invited guest will be briefed on the formation and activities surrounding the "Two Rivers Classic". A Q&A session will also be held to discuss the event's overall goals and objectives. The first meeting between the two UNC system institutions on the football field will be Saturday, August 29, 2009 in FSU's Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.

UNC Pembroke reinstated its football program in 2007. UNCP Athletic Director Dan Kenney and FSU Athletic Director Dr. Edward McLean have contracted the universities into a four-year contract to play football. The Two Rivers Classic was realized by FSU's AD in order to expand the FSU audience and positively expose the overall talents of its student-athletes. An exciting list of activities will be scheduled around the UNCP-FSU contest and the Labor Day weekend. The Two Rivers Experience will lead off the events as a community outreach event that will focus on area youth. A golf tournament, meet and greet social, pre-dawn dance, tailgate contest and post game high school battle of the bands are also on tap for visitors, families and friends.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a public, co-educational, historically American Indian liberal arts university located in the town of Pembroke in Robeson County. The Lumber River (or Lumbee River) winds through Robeson County and extends downstream to the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Soon after crossing into South Carolina, the Lumber River makes its way into the Atlantic Ocean near Georgetown, SC.

Fayetteville State University is a four-year public comprehensive regional university. The HBCU is located in the city of Fayetteville in Cumberland County. The Cape Fear River flows southeast and widening as an estuary and enters the Atlantic Ocean approximately 3 miles west of Cape Fear. The two institutions are located approximately 47 miles apart.
