Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University football team suffered a 28-21 season finale loss to CIAA Southern Division rival Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, November 5th at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. FSU closes out the year 4-6 overall, 4-3 in conference, and 4-1 in the division.

Neither team produced any points in the first quarter. The second quarter nearly went scoreless until the final 65 seconds. Anthony Rook caught a 15 yard touchdown pass from Rod Tinsley to cap a six play, 91 yard drive. On the ensuing kickoff, senior defensive back Brian Walker (Charlotte, NC) went 99 yards on the return for a TD.

Walker tied the game 7-7 with 45 second left to play in the first half. The Rams answered by going 75 yards in three plays. Tinsley connected with Canard Brown for a 33 yard touchdown reception. The score from Brown gave WSSU a 14-7 advantage going into halftime.

The third quarter had a sluggish offensive output. Sophomore place kicker David Lamb (Pineville, NC) drilled a 27 yard field goal to complete a nine play drive. Lamb trimmed the deficit to 14-10 for the Broncos. Winston-Salem State scored later in the third on an ESPN worthy highlight play.

Tinsley threw a screen pass on the right side to Kerrion Moore; he dashed about 30 yards down the right sideline before hurdling a defender and finishes the run for a 70 yard touchdown. FSU trailed 21-10 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, WSSU added to their total with a 73 yard, 13 play drive that ended with a one yard TD run by Justus Pickett. Fayetteville State faced a 28-10 deficit with 7:50 left on the clock. After an injury to starting quarterback Devin Knudsen (Fresno, CA), junior quarterback DeMarius Davis (Sarasota, FL) checked in and led FSU down the field for a score.



Davis completed an eight yard pass to Marquez Beeks (Rockford, IL) for a touchdown with 2:23 remaining in the game. The Broncos converted a two-point conversion to make it a two score game (28-18). Fayetteville State kicked and recovered an onside kick for another offensive opportunity.

After eight plays, the Broncos settled for a 25 yard field goal to cap an eight play possession. FSU trailed 28-21 with less than a minute remaining. Fayetteville State failed to recover the second onside kick attempt. WSSU drained the final seconds on their possession and held onto the win.

Davis picked 79 yards rushing and went 11-of-16 passing for 107 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman running back Stevie Green (Washington, NC) had 78 yards rushing off 16 carries. Beeks finished with three catches for a team-high 56 yards and one TD. Senior defensive back Travis Scales (Southern Pines, NC) had 11 tackles and one fumble recovery.
