Raleigh, NC -- The Fayetteville State University football team improved to 3-0 in the CIAA Southern Division with a 39-16 victory over Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, October 22nd at the George Williams Athletic Complex. FSU moves to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA, while the Falcons fall to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Saint Augustine's struck first by completing a 68 yard drive in five plays for a score. Rovonta Johnson crossed the goal line from two yards out for a touchdown with 12 minutes on the clock. D.J. Johnson ran in a two-point conversion for an early 8-0 SAU lead in the first quarter.
The Broncos answered in the second quarter by outscoring Saint Augustine's 16-2. Redshirt freshman running back Tony Credle (Bayboro, NC) had a two yard TD run to cap a 60 yard drive for FSU. Sophomore place kicker David Lamb (Pineville, NC) connected on the PAT to bring the deficit to just one point (8-7).
The Falcons punted on their next offensive possession and Fayetteville State started their drive at the FSU 46. Redshirt freshman running back Stevie Green (Washington, NC) broke loose for a 49 yard touchdown run on his second carry of the drive. SAU managed to block the PAT kick and returned it for two points.
Before the conclusion of the first half, Lamb drilled a 40 yard field goal for a 16-10 Broncos lead at halftime. Green had the only score of the third quarter. He entered the end zone from a yard away after a 13 play, 98 yard drive. Fayetteville State began the offensive possession following an interception from senior defensive back David Stevenson (Stone Mountain, GA).
FSU held a 23-10 advantage at the start of the fourth quarter. The Broncos defense forced a punt early in the fourth. Credle scored his second touchdown of the afternoon to finish a six play, 34 yard drive. The Broncos piled it on with another rushing touchdown in the fourth by senior running back Darreall Hamlett (Yanceyville, NC) with nine minutes remaining.
Saint Augustine's added a meaningless touchdown at the 4:41 mark with a 26 yard TD reception from Johnson to Lenwood Joyner. Sophomore defensive back Christian Cokely (Greensboro, NC) intercepted the two-point conversion attempt and returned it for a defensive PAT.
The Broncos defense had three interceptions in total, including two picks by senior defensive end James York (Detroit, MI). FSU also racked up six sacks, led redshirt freshman defensive end Jawwad Evans (Durham, NC) with two. Senior defensive back Eric Henderson II (Charlotte, NC) had a team-high nine tackles.
Green finished with a game-high 154 yards off 30 carries with two touchdowns. He has 916 yards on the season and has rushed for over 100 yards in five of the eight games played.
Fayetteville State returns to the gridiron on Saturday, October 29th for their Homecoming contest against Livingstone College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.
