Fayetteville, NC - It all came down to one play with four (4) seconds left on the clock.
Shaw University (2-4 overall, 2-1 CIAA, 0-1 division) overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit to even the score at 21-21 with 7:22 left in the game.
The last possession of the game remained in the hands of Fayetteville State (2-4 overall, 1-2 CIAA, 1-0 division). Starting the drive on its own 19-yard line, the combo run-attack of Donshel Jetton (Mooresville, NC) and Stevie Green (Washington, NC) secured
The drizzling rain intensified as the field goal unit entered the field. After setting up for a 30-yard attempt, Shaw University called a timeout to ice the kicker [David Lamb].
"As the offense was driving, I was just working on taking my steps," said FSU's placekicker David Lamb. "When I saw that we were in field goal range, I walked down to the coaches and told them that I am ready.
When they called the timeout to ice me, no pressure. I was confident in myself. In practice, every week, I am always hitting field goals with Coach Vaughn, Coach Hayes, and all of them blowing whistles and yelling at me. If I can make my kicks when that's happening, in the game, there is nothing to it. I trust the blockers, McDuffie snapping and Knudsen holding."
Lamb nailed the kick which sent Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium into a frenzy.
Fayetteville State opened the game scoring on its first drive with 6:39 left in the first quarter. Richard Latimer (Charlotte, NC) threw a nine (9) yard pass to Brandon Harvey (Fayetteville, NC) for the 7-0 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, FSU jumped ahead 14-0 with a 22-yard passing touchdown from Latimer to Brandon Person-Boyd (Greensboro, NC).
Shaw landed on the scoreboard with 1:31 left in the half with a 12-yard rush from Coleman Blackston.
Stevie Green's 11-yard run into the end zone put FSU ahead 21-7 after intermission.
The Bears inched closer (21-14) when Darron Downing threw a 21-yard touchdown to Trevante Long with 13:16 left in the game. Downing would eventually tie the game (21-21) with a 13-yard rush.
Stevie Green finished with a game-high 92 yards rushing. Latimer completed 19-of-28 for 222 yards. Person-Boyd hauled in five catches for 87 yards.
Shaw University was flagged eight (8) times for 88 yards. FSU also had eight (8) for 66 yards.
Fayetteville State's possession time in the fourth quarter amounted to 11:36, compared to Shaw's 3:24.
Fayetteville State will travel to Charlotte, NC to face Johnson C. Smith (0-5 overall) on Saturday. The Golden Bulls lost 27-22 to Winston-Salem State this weekend.
