Fayetteville, NC - The Broncos of Fayetteville State University made it look easy Saturday evening with a 60-21 win over Chowan University inside Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. With the victory, FSU improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the CIAA.
This was the first match-up in school history on the gridiron for both institutions. Chowan entered the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association this season to compete in football. The Hawks (now 1-5 overall; 0-3 in the CIAA) came into the contest looking to mount their first win in the conference.
The Broncos displayed early that Chowan was still somewhat out of their league. On the opening kickoff, sophomore running back Richard Medlin caught the ball at the eleven yard line and returned it 89 yards the other way for a touchdown. Medlin's first return for a touchdown this season took 13 seconds and put FSU up 6-0.
Chowan squandered away scoring opportunities with miscues on offense. Towards the close of the first quarter, senior quarterback Bryan Hardy added another touchdown to the Broncos' total. Hardy scrambled 21 yards out of the backfield to complete a seven play, 80-yard drive with a score. The extra point gave FSU a 13-0 advantage going into the second quarter.
Hardy was responsible for two more TDs in the second quarter, this time with his arm. First, Hardy connected with sophomore receiver Matt Jenkins for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Then, the QB found senior receiver Darryl Barnett alone in the middle of the field for a 61-yard TD strike.
On the Broncos' final offensive possession of the half, Medlin crossed the goal line after a three yard run. Chowan trailed at halftime, 33-0.
FSU stacked more points against the Hawks to start the second half. Junior defensive end Eric Conway
intercepted a screen pass attempted by C.J. Westler and returned it 35 yards for the touchdown.
The Hawks would go on to score 21 points in the second half, but Fayetteville State walked away with a 60-21 victory in front of their home crowd.
Hardy completed 12-of-20 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns; he also rushed for 70 yards and one TD on the ground. Barnett had 84 yards off four catches and two receiving touchdowns. Medlin stole the show with 235 all-purpose yards; including 174 kickoff return yards and two returns for touchdowns.
Next week, Fayetteville State will hit the road to face CIAA Western Division foe Shaw University (3-3 overall; 2-1 CIAA) in Durham, NC. The contest will take place on Sunday, October 12th from Durham County Stadium. Kickoff is schedule for 4:00 pm.
