Theron Jones is entering his third season on the Broncos football coaching staff. This season, Jones assumes the role as Linebackers Coach and Video Coordinator. In the previous two season, he specialized instruction for the outside linebacker group. This is his seventh season coaching on the collegiate level.
Jones’ presence and player development skills have made a lasting impact. In 2014, three linebackers were in the top five for tackles at FSU. Thomas Perry finished second among Broncos’ tacklers at the outside linebacker position with 74 total tackles, along with five sacks, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Jones is an alumnus of Fayetteville State, earning a bachelor's degree in History in 2005. He is a former football student-athlete and member of the 2002 CIAA Championship Team. Jones later obtained his master’s degree in Education from Grand Canyon University.
In his prior coaching roles, Jones was the Linebackers Coach at Virginia State University for three seasons (2009-12) and coached two CIAA All-Rookie Team members in Byron Gourdine (2009) and Tim Durant (2010).
With Jones’ tutelage, the linebackers improve each year. In his first season, the Trojans recorded five sacks and improved to 15 sacks in year two. In 2011 the linebackers recorded 13 sacks and followed it up with a big year in 2012 with 18. The unit averaged double-digit sacks each season following the 2009 campaign. The defense ranked second in the CIAA in scoring defense (19.40) and pass efficiency defense (115.12); while finishing third in total defense (341.40) and turnover margin (.30).
He had three successful years at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia. While there the team appeared in back-to-back Central Region Championship games and winning one in 2007.
