FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State men's basketball team will look to improve its winning streak to four games on Sunday afternoon in a 4 p.m. contest against the Brevard College Tornadoes. The Broncos return to the court following a 68-61 victory over Virginia-Lynchburg on December 14. FSU enters the game with a 4-4 overall record while the Tornadoes are currently 2-6.
Fayetteville State received a 22-point effort from Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) against Virginia-Lynchburg. The Broncos took advantage of their free-throw opportunities by converting 23 of 28 attempts. Travis Marcus (Sr., Washington, DC) contributed 12 points in the contest while Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) and Juwan Addison (Fr., Fairmont, NC) added nine each.
Shelton and Tate lead the offense in scoring. Shelton is averaging a team-best 16.8 points per game while Tate has chipped in 14.8 and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per contest. The Broncos are averaging 71.2 points per game while opponents are scoring 69.2.
Brevard has four players averaging double-figures in points. Dominique Pickett has a team-high 17.9. Gerel Simmons (13.8), Manzey Miller (12.3) and Miles Leathers (10.0) are the other three Tornadoes who are averaging double-digit points per contest. Brevard is averaging 69.5 points per game while opponents are scoring 83.0 points per game.
The Sunday afternoon contest will mark the second all-time meeting between the two teams. The first meeting in the series came during the 2000-01 season. Fayetteville State edged the Tornadoes 62-61 in Wingate, NC during the Wingate Tipoff Classic.
The Broncos will remain on the road to open conference play on Thursday, Jan. 3 at Chowan in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
