The Fayetteville State University men’s basketball team suffered a 62-49 loss to Chowan University in the beginning of CIAA play on Tuesday, December 13th at the Helms Center. FSU moves to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference.

The matchup should be interesting to watch. Fayetteville State is averaging 76 points per game through seven (7) games while Chowan is averaging 80 points per game through nine (9). Both teams enter shooting 47% from the field but the Broncos have been shooting 36% from behind the arc while the Hawks only shoot 29%.

One thing to watch for is FSU occasionally employs a full-court or half-court press against their opponents. The Broncos have been particularly effective forcing turnovers and converting them into points while also having a positive turnover margin. The Hawks have been turning the ball over a staggering 19 times per game and are losing the turnover margin against their opponents by 4.

Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) is the team's leading scorer, averaging 21 points per game. The 6-2 redshirt sophomore also averages 5.6 rebounds per game and is shooting 59% through seven games. He scored 21 points in the last game against Lander, his sixth (6th) game with at least 20 points.

Denzell Hosch (Shelby, NC) is second on the team in scoring with 15.3 points per game through nine (9) games. The guard, a transfer from North Georgia, is shooting 49% from behind the arc through his first seven (7) games. He had a 25-point outburst against Allen University last Saturday.

Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) is the team's starting point guard and third-leading scorer, averaging 15 points per game while also leading the team in assists with three (3) per game. The senior from E.E. Smith High School is shooting 44% from the field in nine (9) games.

The five leading scorers for the Hawks are guards. Chowan is led by senior Tim Hewett, who is averaging a team-high 17 points and a team-best four (4) assists and five (5) rebounds per game. Hewett is coming off his best game of the season, flirting with a triple-double against Shaw. He had 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Chowan enters the game on a five-game losing streak after winning their first four (4) games. The Hawks recently fell 87-80 to Shaw University on Tuesday, December 12th.

Fayetteville State suffered an 80-63 loss to Lander on this past Monday.
