FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State men’s basketball team will remain on the road this weekend as it travels to Mount Olive, NC to participate in the 47th Annual Pickle Classic at Kornegay Arena. The Broncos are one of four teams taking part in tournament and will face the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at 5 p.m. on Friday evening before wrapping up play against the host Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
Fayetteville State is coming off its first loss of the season on the road to 24th-ranked Barton 84-79 after a late rally fell short. It is 1-1 on the season after opening with an 83-63 win over Barber-Scotia at Felton J. Capel Arena. Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) and Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) led the FSU offense against Barton with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
The duo leads Fayetteville State in scoring this season as Shelton is averaging 21.5 points per game and Tate with 20.0 points per game. Shelton, the reigning CIAA Player of the Week, is shooting 58 percent (14-of-24) from the field and 63 percent (10-of-16) beyond the 3-point line. Tate posts a 63 percent (15-of-24) clip from the field. Newcomer Louis Craft (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) is leading the team with 7.5 rebounds per game and has six of the team’s nine blocks.
Lenoir-Rhyne heads into the two-day event with a 2-0 record overall with victories over Limestone and Queens. The Bears have three players averaging double-digit points per game this season in Denzel Dillingham (18.5), Matt Kunz (12.5) and B.J. Beasley (10.0).
Mount Olive will be opening its 2012-13 season this weekend with the Pickle Classic.
Ticket prices for the 47th Annual Pickle Classic are $15 in advance for an All-Session Pass and $10 per night at the gate.
The Broncos will return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as they host Barton at 7:30 p.m.
