Fayetteville State Men's Basketball Predicted to Finish Sixth in CIAA

Oct. 4, 2017

Charlotte, NC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and its Men's Basketball Coaches Association announced the 2017-18 Men's Basketball Predicted Order of Finish. The Broncos of Fayetteville State University was predicted to finish sixth overall and third in the Southern Division after a 13-16 season and a CIAA Tournament Runner-Up Title. The Broncos received 64 voting points.

Ken Spencer will return for his second season with the Broncos. Fayetteville State had run to remember last season in the CIAA Tournament after falling 62-54 to Bowie State University in the championship game. The Broncos returned to the title show for the first time since 2008.

"We had an amazing run in the tournament," said Coach Spencer. "We talked about it all year long last year last season about being that team on the podium Saturday night. This year we will talk about being the last team on the podium."

Since winning its first title in 1973, FSU has played for the crown three times (1997, 2001, and 2005).

Josh Bryant, who was named to last season's CIAA All-Rookie Team, will return for his sophomore season. The native of Fayetteville, NC played in 24 games and started 22 during the regular season. He averaged a team-high 12 points per game, along with 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 assists. He had a season-high 23 points against Virginia Union (January 7th). Bryant earned CIAA Rookie of the Week honors on two occasions.

After a full season of recruiting, Fayetteville State has put a lot of effort into building a basketball program. High School East-West All-Stars Zaire Williams and Jeremiah Pope is a couple of Coach Spencer's top recruits. Williams is a 6-8 forward from Winston-Salem, NC (Winston-Salem Prep.) while Pope is a 6-4 guard from Clinton, NC (Clinton HS).

Coach Spencer has also added transfer guard Denzell Hosch (Shelby, NC) from the University of North Georgia. Hosch averaged 12.9 points per game and shot 80% (64-80) from the free throw line for the Night Hawks. He shot a season-high 26 points against Montevallo.

The Fayetteville State basketball teams will be introduced to the public during its Bronco Frenzy event on Monday, October 15th immediately following the 6 pm volleyball match versus Winston-Salem State. Both events are free to the public.

The Broncos will kick off the regular season at the CIAA/MEC/PSAC Challenge host by Winston-Salem State on November 10th. FSU will host Wingate for its home opener on November 18th at 2 pm.
