CHARLOTTE, NC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) kicked off the 2013-14 basketball season with its annual Media Day and release of the Coaches' Association predicted order of finish and pre-season All Conference teams.
The Fayetteville State Broncos were predicted to finish fifth in the Southern Division behind Winston-Salem State, Livingstone, Shaw and Johnson C. Smith; as announced in order by Stan Lewter, emcee, of Urban Sports & Entertainment. St. Augustine's was selected to finish behind the Broncos.
Senior forward Tyrrel Tate (Raleigh, NC) was also announced as a member of the Pre-season All CIAA team. Tate led the Broncos with 16.1 points per game and scored his 1,000-point during FSU's tournament game last season. Through his career, Tate has been named to the 2011 CIAA All-Rookie Team, 2012 & 2013 Preseason All CIAA Team and 2013 All-CIAA Team
"We recruited Tyrrel Tate from day one. He is a guy that I put the mantel on and is expected to be a leader on and off the floor. I expect the experiences from his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons to motivate him to great heights", proclaims Head Coach Alphonza Kee during the fire-side chat with Lewter.
The event, held at the Sheraton Uptown Charlotte, featured special guests including the mayor of Charlotte, Patsy Kinsey, Vice President of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, Mike Butts, and Donna Julian, Senior Vice President of Arena and Event Operations of Time Warner Cable Arena.
Fayetteville State finished the 2012-13 season with a 9-17 overall record and 4-12 finish in conference play. FSU graduated four seniors and lost three starters from last year's team.
The motivation for the Broncos will be the return of 90% of its offense and a player of the year candidate in Tyrrel Tate.
"In addition, we've had an outstanding recruitment class and red-shirt holdouts that have help us grow in three dimensions", adds Coach Kee.
Defending CIAA champion Bowie State University was picked to finish first in the CIAA Northern Division.
Fayetteville State will open the regular season on Friday, November 8th at the Winston-Salem Classic hosted by Winston-Salem State University. The Broncos will play Concord at 5:00 pm in C.E. Gaines Center.
