CHARLOTTE, NC – Fayetteville State forward Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) has been named to the 2012-13 All-CIAA Preseason Men’s Basketball Team, while the Broncos were predicted to finish fourth in the CIAA Southern Division, it was announced on Wednesday at the conference’s media day.
Tate, who is one of four starters returning this year for Fayetteville State, earns the preseason All-Conference honor after averaging 11.0 points per game last season in 27 games played with 13 starts. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds per game, and scored a season-high 19 points in conference play against Johnson C. Smith.
The Broncos were picked to finish behind Winston-Salem State, Shaw and Johnson C. Smith in the Southern Division, while the Rams were selected as the favorites in the division. The Bears and Golden Bulls followed in second and third places behind Winston-Salem State, while Livingstone and St. Augustine’s garnered fifth and sixth place recognition in the division.
Bowie State was predicted to finish first in the CIAA Northern Division, followed by Elizabeth City State, Virginia Union, Virginia State, Lincoln (PA) and Chowan.
Fayetteville State, who is entering its fourth season under head coach Alphonza Kee, finished the 2011-12 season with a 10-17 overall record and 6-10 conference mark. The Broncos return 11 letter winners from last season and welcome in three newcomers, but must replace two starters from 2011-12 in Sidney Evans and Tim Plummer.
The 2012-13 season for Fayetteville State will tip off on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against Barber-Scotia in Fayetteville.
