FSU Broncos Excel Academically as Student-Athletes with 82 Earning a 3.0 or Better GPA

May 22, 2018

Fayetteville, N.C. – Fayetteville State University is one of many NCAA Division II colleges and universities that provide thousands of student-athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level of scholarship athletics while excelling in the classroom and fully engaging in the broader campus experience.

The Department of Athletics is proud to announce that 82 of its student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 grade point average or better following the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year. Thirty-two (32) of those student-athletes have a 3.5 GPA or better.

“I really appreciate the efforts of the entire University College’s academic support services,” said Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett. “Our success in the classroom is proof that their support system works.”

Fayetteville State prides itself in academic excellence.

FSU earned the designation of Kappa Chapter for the National College Athlete Honor Society – Chi Alpha Sigma (XA∑) last year as the tenth (10th) college or university in the state of North Carolina.

During the recent Bronco Sports Awards Ceremony, 13 inductees met the criteria of a 3.4 GPA or higher in their junior year of eligibility. The 2018 Fayetteville State Chi Alpha Sigma inductees were: Chinwendu Maduegbunam [Women's Basketball]; Devondra Bazemore [Bowling]; Ashlee Gaskins [Cheerleading]; Brittany Lee [Softball]; Ayanna Dawson [Cheerleading]; Brandon Harvey [Football]; Devin Knudsen [Football]; Jordan McGrigg [Football]; Tristan Walker [Football]; Sarah Mastin [Women's Cross Country]; Collin Nordan [Men's Cross Country]; Avery Shaw [Volleyball]; and Joshua Smith [Men's Basketball/Golf].

The society's motto is "Excellence in Academics and Athletics." Its watchwords are "Athletics, Academics Achievement, and Attitude." The mission of the NCAHS is to bring honor and recognition to deserving student-athletes, their families, teams, athletic departments and colleges in much the same way as Phi Beta Kappa honors scholastics.
