HAMPTON, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced on Thursday afternoon that Fayetteville State forward Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) has been named to the 2013 All-CIAA Men's Basketball Team. Tate leads the Broncos in scoring this season with 16.7 points per game. The All-Conference Team was voted on by the CIAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association.
Tate has played in all 24 games this season for Fayetteville State with 22 starts. He leads the team in rebounds per game with 6.5 while playing in 28.4 minutes per contest. The 6-5, 215-pound forward has scored in double figures 21 times this year including a career-high 35 at home against Bowie State. He also added 30 points in FSU's conference-opening victory at Chowan. Tate has scored 10 or more points in 13 straight contests.
He was named CIAA Player of the Week on January 21 for his performances against Bowie State and Johnson C. Smith after nearly averaging a double-double with 25.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Tate is currently tied for sixth in the conference in scoring and ninth in rebounding.
Elizabeth City State's Angelo Sharpless was voted as the league's Most Valuable Player after ranking at the top of nearly every offensive category. Marcus Wells of Winston-Salem State has been tabbed the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.
The All-Conference honorees will be formally recognized at the Men's and Women's Tip-Off Awards Luncheon on Monday, Feb. 25 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
