HAMPTON, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in conjunction with the CIAA Sports Information Directors Association announced their selections for CIAA Men's Basketball Player, Newcomer, Rookie and Coach of the Week on Monday evening. Both Tyrrel Tate and Joshua Dawson were recognized for their play.
Tate was named the league’s Player of the Week for his stellar performance over last three games. Tate averaged 22.7 points per game and shot 53.7 percent from the floor. He was 50 percent from beyond the arc and hit 81.8 percent of his free throws.
In his best performance of the week, Tate scored 31 points against Virginia Union. After Monday’s contest at Bowie State, Tate currently sits sixth in the league with 18.1 points per game. He is 17th in field goal percentage (50.5 percent) and has hit the 11th most 3-pointers (24) with the 13th highest 3-point percentage (36.4 percent).
Dawson was named the CIAA’s Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. Dawson averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists per game for the week. He had a 16-point, seven-assist performance in a win against Virginia Union.
For the season, Dawson has seven more assists (81) than anybody else in the CIAA. His 5.1 assists per game average also ranks first in the league. Dawson is 33rd in the league with 9.4 points per game.
St. Augustine’s Amere May was the CIAA Newcomer of the Week, while The Lincoln University’s John Hill was the league’s Coach of the Week.
