FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State men’s basketball team is trying to make people forget two heartbreaking losses in a row. Winning against Virginia Union at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday would go a long way toward doing just that. FSU, after starting 2-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, has stumbled to 2-2 in the conference.
The Broncos will try, for the third time, to eclipse last season’s win total and tie the 10 wins the team recorded in the 2011-12 season. FSU lost double-digit leads in heartbreaking defeats against Elizabeth City State and Lincoln (PA) in its last two games.
Tyrrel Tate scored 27 points against Lincoln (PA) to increase his average scoring output to 17.1 points per game, ninth-best in the conference.
Juwan Addison had a season-best 10 assists in the loss to the Lions. He has made a steady impact, especially on the defensive end, since his season started on Dec. 17, ironically against Virginia Union.
These teams met in a nonconference match-up in Fayetteville on Dec. 17. FSU won that contest, 84-81. Joshua Dawson leads the league in assists per game, at 5.2.
The Broncos are in their 71st season of competition and boast an 851-950 all-time record and 398-463 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. FSU's lone conference tournament championship came during the 1972-73 campaign. The Broncos have played in six tournament championship games.
Lincoln (PA) Recap
A 54-41 lead with just over 13 minutes left wasn’t enough for the Broncos. The Lions closed fast to steal a home victory and drop FSU to 2-2 in conference.
Tate had 27 points in the contest, while Addison had a season-best 10 assists.
Virginia Union Scouting Report
The Panthers are under the direction of third-year head coach Lugman Jaaber. Jaaber is 28-40 in her tenure, including a 3-11 mark this year.
VUU enters the contest fresh off a 78-68 loss to Shaw.
Avery Jirmnson is 17th in the conference with 13.7 points per game.
The Panthers are sixth in the conference at 77.0 points per game. Defensively, they are the worst team in the league by nearly six points, surrendering 84.2 points per game.
