FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State men’s basketball team heads north to take on the Virginia State Trojans on Saturday evening at Daniel Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the Broncos look to increase their winning streak to six games. FSU is coming off an 81-75 overtime victory at Chowan on Thursday to open CIAA play.
Fayetteville State (6-4, 1-0) rallied from eight points down in the second half against Chowan to lead 67-62. The Hawks tied the game at the end of regulation with a three-pointer but the Broncos went on an 11-5 run in overtime to capture the victory. Louis Craft (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He was one of four FSU players to score in double-figures. Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) finished with 18 points while Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) added 17. Seth Hawkins (Sr., Greensboro, NC) recorded 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting behind the three-point line.
The Broncos enter the weekend matchup ninth in the CIAA in scoring at 72.0 points per game and eighth in scoring defense as opponents average 69.6 points per contest. Fayetteville State currently has three players scoring in double-figures led by Shelton’s 16.6 points per game. Tate averages 14.4 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per contest followed by Craft’s 10.1 points per game. FSU is shooting 45% (252-of-562) as a team.
Virginia State (5-5, 0-1) is coming off a 61-58 loss at home to Saint Augustine’s in its CIAA opener. Christopher Grier scored a game-high 18 points for the Trojans followed by Mike Bynum with 17. Virginia State is ranked 11th in the conference in scoring offense (67.7 points) and fifth in scoring defense (67.1 points). Kenny Mitchell and Khalil Tate lead the Trojans in scoring.
VSU leads the all-time series of Fayetteville State 27-23. The series dates back to 1957 when the Trojans defeated FSU 73-47 during the CIAA Tournament semi-finals in Durham. The Broncos are 4-1 in the last five meetings but Virginia State won the only meeting last season 71-67.
Fayetteville State will wrap its season-long six-game road trip on Monday, Jan. 7 when it travels down to Elizabeth City, NC to take on the Elizabeth City State Vikings. The contest is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

VIRGINIA STATE CLIPS BRONCOS IN CIAA CROSS-DIVISIONAL MATCHUP
PETERSBURG, Va. - Ibn Rassoull scored a game-high 21 points while Kenny Mitchell had 18 as Virginia State slipped past Fayetteville State in men's basketball on Thursday night at Daniel Gym.
The game was close throughout, despite the Broncos falling into a 12-4 hole early in the game. Fayetteville State (5-14, 3-8) used a 21-12 edge in the first half's last 10 minutes to take its first lead before trailing 26-25 at the break.
