FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State Broncos will begin CIAA competition on Thursday evening when it travels to take on the Chowan Hawks at 7:30 p.m. in The Helms Center. The Broncos are riding a season-long four-game winning streak after defeating Brevard College in come-from-behind fashion 69-67 on Dec. 30.

Fayetteville State enters the conference opener with a 5-4 record while the Hawks are 5-3 on the season. The Broncos lead the all-time series, which began in the 2010-11 season, over Chowan 2-0. FSU won the first meeting 88-84 in Murfreesboro on Jan. 8, 2011 and followed with a 76-67 win in Fayetteville on Jan. 7, 2012.

FSU’s season-best win streak extended to four games on Dec. 30 when it rallied to defeat Brevard on the road. The Broncos trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but opened the second half on a 20-4 run. Louis Craft (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) scored a career-high 18 points and added three rebounds en route to the victory, while Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) added 14 points.

The Broncos come into the contest ninth in the CIAA in scoring offense at 71.0 points per game led by Shelton, who hit the game-winning basket against Brevard, at 16.4 points per game. Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) is right behind Shelton at 14.1 points per game and leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per contest. Craft, who was recently named CIAA Newcomer of the Week, is second on the squad in rebounds at 6.0 per game and third in scoring at 9.1 points per game. Andre Best (Sr., Raleigh, NC) has a team-high 4.0 assists per game.

The Hawks are sixth in the conference in scoring at 75.0 points per game and are led on offense by Quinton McDuffie with 15.5 points per game. McDuffie is one of four Chowan players to average in double-figures followed by Kyree Bethel (13.8), Ashante Ross (13.5) and Rickey Lamb (10.0). Ross leads the team in rebounding with 7.8 per contest while Greg Alston averages 4.5 assists per game.

TATE'S CLUTCH SHOOTING HELPS BRONCOS SNAP SKID
During the offseason, a casual walk through a dimmed Felton J. Capel Arena would bring with it the sound of a dribbling basketball - and a swishing net. A glance down below, and one could see Tyrrel Tate, working on his jump shot, and doing it from behind the arc. Having attempted just seven 3-point shots his freshman year, and only making two of them, the 6-foot-5 wing from Raleigh knew he needed to add to his game. All of that extra work paid off on Saturday night as Tate buried two critical 3-pointers to help Fayetteville State snap a three-game skid with a 76-67 victory over Chowan at Capel Arena.
