Pensacola, FL - In the final game of the Comfort Inn - Pensacola Beach Hoop Classic, junior guard Andy Gebru posted a game high 26 points to excel Fayetteville State over host University of West Florida 76-71.
Senior Phillippe Harris scored 25 points, while freshman guard Ariel Robinson netted 14 to help the Broncos to a 4-5 overall record. The Argonauts, who fell to 7-4 overall, had four players to finish in double figures with its leading scorer totaling 15 points. After eight lead changes in the first half, both teams stood at an even 31-31 intermission score.
Harris nailed a three-pointer with 7:56 on the clock that ignited a 13-4 run that gave the Broncos its biggest lead of the game at 68-59 (9 points). During the run, Harris hit three three-pointers and two free throws for 11 points. FSU improved its shooting percentage in the second half by making 13 of 23 shots (56.5%) in field goals and 7 of 11 from behind the arc (63.6%). The Broncos also converted 12 of 18 free throw opportunities.
Fayetteville State dominated the opponent's board by eliminating second change field goals. They grabbed 30 defensive rebounds compared to the Argonauts 12 offensive boards. The Broncos dished out 18 assists, stole the rock six times and blocked four shots.
Both teams had its share of leads in the first half with five tie scores. The Argonauts largest lead of the half was by four points while the Broncos lead was by five.
Gebru led the half with 13 points making three of eight three-pointers. The Broncos converted 7 of 21 threes (33%), shot 29% from the floor and 50% from the line. West Florida's leading scorer, Ryan Henry, had seven points with the team averaging 43% from the floor and 33% from the line. The Argonauts made 3 of 11 three-pointers for 27%.
