Charlotte, NC - The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team suffered a 95-80 loss to Queens University of Charlotte on Friday evening inside Ovens Athletic Center. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Broncos and drops them to 7-2 in the standings.
FSU went toe-to-toe with the Queens in the first half. Even though QU shot 53.3% from the field (16-of-30) and 42.9% from behind the arc (3-of-7), Fayetteville State was ahead at the half 42-41. There were six lead changes and four ties in the tightly contested opening frame.
Junior guard De'Shaune Griffin and sophomore guard Ariel Robinson were the Broncos' top scorers at intermission with 11 and nine points, respectively. Guard Patrick Fox had 16 points off six-of-eight shooting from the field at the break.
The game remained close deep into the second half. A jumper from forward Charles Burgess broke the 13th and final tie of game. The score also put Queens ahead 74-72 with a little more than five minutes left to play. QU continued to attack the basket and get to the free throw line, which prevented Fayetteville State from regaining the lead.
The officials called 28 personal fouls on the Broncos, sending Queens to the FT line 41 times for the game (33 attempts in the 2nd half). QU converted on 30 of their 41 free throw attempts (73.2%) and shot 55.4% from the floor (31-of-56). FSU gave up 54 points in the second half and their reserves were outscored 61-33 by Queens' bench.
Four Queens' players scored in double figures led by Fox's game-high 28 points. The Broncos also had four finish with a double-digit point totals. Griffin and Robinson both had 15 points. Junior forward Malcolm Jay was five-of-six from field for 13 points. Senior forward Darshawn Johnson produced 11 points and four rebounds, while junior forward Jason Thompson had nine points and seven boards.
FSU returns to court on Saturday, January 3rd when they play Lincoln (PA) University inside Capel Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
