Box Score

Fayetteville, NC - The Broncos returned to their home court with a 58-55 win over Wingate University Wednesday evening inside Capel Arena. FSU is currently on a four-game winning streak and improve to 7-1 overall. The loss snaps a five-game win streak for the Bulldogs, who fall to 5-4 in the standings.

Fayetteville State got off a quick start, up 14-5 with 12:32 remaining in the first half. Wingate made some defensive adjustments and went on a 7-0 scoring run to narrow the margin. Despite leading the majority of the opening half, FSU relinquished the lead with less than a minute remaining before halftime. The Bulldogs were up at halftime 24-23.

Neither team had impressive numbers at the half. Wingate shot 31.3% from the field (10-of-32), while the Broncos shot 32.3% from the floor (10-of-31). Sophomore guard Ariel Robinson was the leading scorer at the break for FSU with six points. Wingate's David Johnson carried the bulk of the load for his team with eights points and four rebounds.

The slow, methodical pace continued in the second frame. A jumper from junior forward Davon Hood tied the game for the fourth and final time at 49 with 4:45 left to play. Wingate turned the ball over on their next offensive possession and senior guard Darshawn Johnson would drive the lane to give FSU a 51-49 advantage.

On their next possession, the Bulldogs missed two free throws. Junior guard De'Shaune Griffin seized the opportunity for the Broncos with a lay-up in traffic to put FSU up four. Wingate would score but never recapture the lead as Fayetteville State closed out the game at the line. FSU scored their last five points at the free throw and took home a 58-55 win.

"We played very hard tonight," Fayetteville State head coach Sam Hanger says. "Our play was pretty focused on the defensive end. We did not shoot the ball well, but we rebounded and made our free throws." The Broncos out-rebounded Wingate 39-to-31 and scored 13 point off second chance opportunities. FSU also shot 76.7% from the free throw line (23-of-30).

Johnson led the way for Fayetteville State with 12 points and six boards. Griffin and Robinson each contributed with 10 points. Ben Davis and Tommy Coles both had 13 points for the Bulldogs.

The Broncos travel to Charlotte, NC to face Queens University on Friday, December 19. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
