Tyrrel Tate (42) Picked Up His First Double-Double Of The Season At Barber-Scotia

CONCORD, NC – The Fayetteville State men’s basketball team had three players score in double-figures on Tuesday evening as it defeated the Barber-Scotia Sabers 76-63 at Newsom Gymnasium. Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) picked up his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) provided 15 points. Andre Best (Sr., Raleigh, NC) also added 11 points.
The Broncos have now won two games in a row to improve their record to 3-4 on the season, while the Sabers fall to 2-12 overall.
Shelton and Best had seven points each in the opening half as Fayetteville State led 37-29 at halftime. The Broncos shot 60.9% (14-of-23) from the field despite committing 17 first-half turnovers. Barber-Scotia was unable to take advantage of the turnovers scoring just eight points, while FSU had 17 points off 13 Saber turnovers. Both teams recorded 20 points in the paint, six fast break points and 17 points from the bench.
Fayetteville State trailed just once in the contest after Thomas Scott made back-to-back free throws to open the game. The Broncos led by as much as 11 points twice in the opening half on a layup by Travis Marcus (Jr., Washington, DC) with 6:30 remaining and two free throws by Best at the 4:38 mark. Barber-Scotia managed just one three-pointer in the opening stanza as Lee Sweeney posted a team-high seven points.
FSU increased its pressure defensively in the second half as the Sabers only made seven of their 27 field goal attempts. Barber-Scotia shot 25.9% in the half as the Broncos dominated on points in the paint (20-6), second-chance points (11-3) and bench points (25-15). Fayetteville State shot 40.6% in the second half led by Tate’s nine points.
The Broncos held their largest lead of the game at 16 points on a layup by Juwan Addison (Fr., Fairmont, NC) with 3:46 remaining. The Sabers scored 18 of their 34 second-half points from the free-throw line after attempting a total of 26 in the half.
Fayetteville State finished the game shooting 49.1% (27-of-55) from the field and 40% (4-of-10) behind the three-point line. Barber-Scotia shot 32.1% (18-of-56) overall and 15.8% (3-of-19) behind the three-point arc. The Broncos held a 49-31 advantage in rebounds and scored 40 points in the paint.
FSU will remain on the road this weekend as it travels to Lynchburg, VA on Friday, Dec. 14 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Virginia-Lynchburg. The Broncos will also look to complete the season sweep of Virginia-Lynchburg after winning the first meeting 82-68 in Fayetteville on Nov. 27.
