Fayetteville State Pulls Away 86-74 From Morris

Fayetteville, NC- The Fayetteville State men’s basketball team outlasted Morris College, 86-74 Thursday evening in Felton J. Capel Arena. Four Broncos scored in double figures to improve to a 3-4 overall record and drop the Hornets to 1-5.

Tonight’s game was a close affair for much of the first half and part of the second, featuring two (2) lead changes and two (2) tied scores. FSU shot 52% (31-of-60) from the field. The Broncos were aggressive using a half-court press to force 21 turnovers and converting 17 points off mistakes.

Sophomore Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) had a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Tonight was Bryant’s fifth 20-point game of the season. Senior Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) had 19 points and 8 rebounds.  Denzell Hosch (Shelby, NC) was on fire from behind the arc, shooting 5-of-10 in 3-pointers for 17 points. Freshman Jordan Brown (Holly Springs, NC) added ten (10) points on a perfect 5 of 5 shooting. Junior Javen McNeill (West End, NC) had a game-high ten (10) rebounds.


 

 

In the second half, the Hornets came out on an early 5-0 run to erase a nine (9) point halftime (40-31) deficit to trail by four (4). The Hornets managed to whittle the lead down further to 45-44. A 7-2 run helped the Broncos get the score to 56-50 before a Gerald Phillips (Dublin, GA) three-pointer put the Hornets within three (3) points (56-53) with 13:12 left in the game. Phillips finished with a team-high 14 points for Morris.

In the very next possession, Hosch countered with a three-pointer to ignite a 9-0 Broncos run to give FSU a 65-53 lead with 13 minutes left. After the 12 point lead, the Broncos led by as many as 13 and as little as seven (7) points in the second half to secure the win. The Broncos shot a blazing 55% from the field in the second half.

In the first half, the Broncos raced out to an early 7-2 lead. The Hornets battled back to close the gap to 8-9. Down 17-12, the Hornets’ Ahmad Peoples (Sumter, SC) and Phillips hit back-to-back threes for Morris to take the lead.

However, Jordan Brown responded with a vicious dunk to get the lead back for FSU. A Hosch three-pointer broke another tie a little later in the game. A layup by the Hornets’ Peoples put the game back within one (1) point at 24-23. FSU then answered with a 16-5 run (including two separate 6-0 runs) to extend the lead to 40-28. Three (3) made free throws from Morris put the game at 40-31.

At the half, Bryant already had 14 points after entering today’s game averaging a team-high 21 points per game.

The Broncos travel to Farmville, Virginia to take on the Longwood Lancers on Saturday, December 2nd. Fayetteville State will play host to the Lander Bearcats on December, 11th.
