FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Missed free throws added up in Fayetteville State 75-65 loss to 15th ranked Barton (5-0 overall). The Broncos (1-4 overall) went to the line 21 times and was only successful with 38.1% of them. In the second half, FSU needed to convert the free opportunities but struggled at 4-of-13 and went cold in shooting with 13-of-32.

Gerald Boston, of the Bulldogs, led all with 29 points. Fayetteville State sophomore Anthony Shelton (Cary, NC) led a second half surge with a game total of 18 points. Barton led at halftime 40-31.

The atmosphere of Felton J. Capel Arena set the Broncos on fire at tip-off. Transfer sophomore JeTerrel Murray (Charlotte, NC) got his first start of the season and scored the first basket of the game with an offensive put-back. From there, Fayetteville State was rocking and rolling to a nine-point lead (17-8) with 11:28 left in the half.

Gerald Boston hits his first of four three-pointers to spark an 11-2 run that would eventually tie that game at 19 with 8:15 left in the half. The momentum swing would stay in favor of the Bulldogs as the visitors went up by nine at intermission. Boston led with 19 first half points shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

JeTerrel Murray made 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc to lead the Broncos with ten points.

FSU regrouped during the break and it showed on the court. The Broncos decreased the halftime margin of nine to two (40-42) with 13:43 left. Unfortunately, that is when the missed opportunities began to hurt. Barton proceeded on a 17-1 run that put the Bulldogs up by 18. FSU missed eight field goals during the span.

Fayetteville State shot 46.3% for the game and went 7-of-22 in three-pointers. The Broncos struggle at the line added up to 8-of-21.

 

 

Anthony Shelton made five of his eight shots with three of them coming from beyond 20 feet 9-inch arc in the second half. His efforts along with Tyrrel Tate's (Junior - Raleigh, NC) seven points cut the lead to six (62-68) with 1:30 remaining.

To put the game away, Barton made seven of ten free throws to close out the game with the victory.

Shelton's 18 points led four Broncos in double figures. Tate and Murray finished with 13 and 12 while Louis Craft had ten.

Barton's Keith Manley had 16 points and Chris Flemmings had ten. The Bulldogs shot 45.5% from the field (25-of-55); but of those, nine were three-pointers. BC fared better at the charity stripe with 61.5% (16-of-26).

Fayetteville State will play host to Virginia-Lynchburg in a double header on Tuesday, November 27th. NABC ranked Barton will travel to Banner Elk on next Tuesday for a match-up against Lees-McRae.
