Fayetteville, NC - One of the first goals you set in your preseason talks is to defend home court. Today, Fayetteville State did just that by defeating Wingate 65-55 in its men's basketball home-opener. Former Seventy-First High School standout Josh Bryant and E.E. Smith standout Willie Gilmore combined for 41 of the Broncos 65 points.

"Any time you can beat a very good basketball team in your own building with your fans is always a big win," said Head Coach Ken Spencer. "We have a young basketball team, we are learning on the fly, and we are growing. So, every win is a big win for us."

Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) led the game with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting while Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) chipped in 15 points and dished out six assists. The Broncos shot 45.1% (23-of-51) from the field compared to the Bulldogs 40.4% (21-of-52). FSU converted 16 turnovers into 20 points.

The Broncos (1-2 overall) utilized that tenacity and defensive prowess to jump ahead to an early 11-point lead (15-4) within the first five minutes of the game. Wingate (2-2 overall) would close within five with a 6-0 run to trail 15-10, but FSU rose to the challenge with a run of its own to surpass its previous lead with a 9-0 run and a 14-point lead (24-10). The Bulldogs managed to cut back into the lead and trail 32-26 at the half.

Bryant led the first half with 14 points for the Broncos while Marco Haskins led the Bulldogs with ten.

The FSU Broncos dominated the second half, pretty much the same way it did in the first. FSU scored 12 points off turnovers and grabbed 13 defensive rebounds in the half. The Broncos pushed its lead back to 14 (53-39) with 6:11 remaining and closed it out with the 65-55 win.

Zeriq Lolar led Wingate with 17 points while Haskins finished with 14.

Fayetteville State will travel to Morris College in Sumter, SC on Tuesday for a 7 pm tipoff.
