MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Fayetteville State men’s basketball team suffered a 85-66 defeat to the Mount Olive Trojans in the finale of the 47th Annual Pickle Classic on Saturday evening at the Kornegay Arena. Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) scored 19 points and dished out five assists to lead the FSU offense, while Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Broncos fall to 1-3 on the season while the Trojans improve to 1-1. Fayetteville State finishes the Pickle Classic with a 0-2 record after falling to Lenoir-Rhyne 55-51 on Friday night.
FSU and Mount Olive both found it difficult to score in the first half as both teams combined for 18 baskets and four three-pointers. Fayetteville State shot 30.8 percent (8-for-26) from the field and 18.2 percent (2-for-11) behind the three-point line. The Trojans connected on 10 of 32 attempts for a 31.3 percent clip from the field and 22.2 percent (2-for-11) beyond the three-point arc.
Shelton was the only player on both teams to compile double-digit points in the first half as he recorded 10 points and made the Broncos’ two three-pointers of the half. Mount Olive led 31-22 at intermission.
Mount Olive led for a majority of the first half as there was only one lead change. The Trojans converted 12 Fayetteville State turnovers into 11 points, and received 11 more points from their bench. Kendall Hargrove scored a team-high nine points for Mount Olive in the opening half.
Both offenses heated up in the second half as Fayetteville State improved its shooting percentage from the field to 42.9 percent (12-of-28) and three-point land at 45.5 percent (5-of-11). The Broncos also connected on 15 of 18 (83.3 percent) free-throw attempts. Shelton and Tate had nine points each for Fayetteville State.
The Trojans offense, led by Mahamed Ibrahim’s 11 points, shot 55.6 percent (20-of-36) in the second stanza despite only hitting on two of their 10 three-point attempts. Mount Olive was able to take advantage of 20 points in the paint and 14 second-chance points to outscore FSU 55-44 in the half.
Louis Craft (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) and JeTerrel Murray (So., Charlotte, NC) added eight points each for the Broncos, while Andre Best (Sr., Raleigh, NC) contributed seven. The Trojans had six players finish with 10 or more points led by Hargrove with 14. Dory Hines had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Fayetteville State will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as it returns to Felton J. Capel Arena to face Barton at 7:30 p.m. It will be the second matchup between the two teams in seven days as Barton defeated the Broncos 84-79 in Wilson, NC on Nov. 13.
