WILSON, NC - Fayetteville State failed to upset 24th ranked (NABC Preseason Coaches Poll) Barton 79-84 at the Bulldogs "Dog House" Tuesday evening. The Broncos (1-1 overall) fought a hard contest trimming a 74-60 deficit, at 2:50, down to five with 39 seconds left. The Bulldogs (2-0 overall), who were up 43-39 at halftime, made 27-of-32 foul shots and forced 28 turnovers.
Tyrell Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) tallied 20 points and eight rebounds to pace FSU. CIAA Player of the Week Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) netted 19 points on 4-of-8 three-pointers and seven assists. Andre Best (Sr., Raleigh, NC) contributed ten points.
Fayetteville State faced adversity at the 8:08 mark of the first half trailing 16-21. The Broncos handled the challenge and closed within four at intermission (39-43). FSU made 65% of its field goals in the first half but dropped it to 51.9% in the second. The team made 10-of-18 free throws in the first half and 9-of-13 following intermission.
FSU finished with a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint, but the Bulldogs held a 32-22 edge in points off turnovers.
Barton kept a lead of double digits in the second half until less than seven minutes remaining. The Broncos cut the lead down to five before the Bulldogs sealed the victory at the free throw line.
The Bulldogs' Brian McNair led all with 23 points. He made 8-of-15 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the 3-point line. Gerald Boston chipped in 18 points while Jon Hart added 16.
Fayetteville State will participate in the Mount Olive Pickle Classic this weekend. FSU will face Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday at 5:00 pm and host Mt. Olive on Saturday at 7:30.
