FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State's Tyrell Tate and Anthony Shelton combined their talents to stampede Barber-Scotia 83-63 in Felton J. Capel Arena. The duo scored more than half (44 points) of the Broncos points on opening night. Shelton led the first half with 21 of his 24 points as FSU led at halftime 44-42. Tate dominated the second half with 14 of his 20 points.
"It was an exciting time for a regular season basketball game," commented Head Coach Alphonza Kee. "It was an outstanding crowd for it to be Veterans Day weekend. We played hard and good enough to win."
Barber-Scotia (0-1 overall) put forth a gallant effort during the first half. The Sabers led by as much as nine points and held the advantage throughout the half. BSC made five-of-nine three-pointers and 11-of-18 free throws.
Through six tied scores and nine lead changes, the Broncos took a two-point advantage before the intermission horn. Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) had the best opening game of his career. He made five-of-seven field goals from behind the arc. Shelton finished the game six-of-eight from three-point land (a career best) and eight-of-ten from the field.
Tyrell Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) pounded the middle during the second half with 14 points (six-of-eight field goals). He was perfect from the line making all four of his free throws during the game. Travis Marcus (Jr., Washington, DC) also scored in double-figures with ten points.
Jabraile Newkirk scored 17 points to lead the Sabers. Lee Sweeney tipped in 13 points while LaKeith Scott added ten. Barber-Scotia committed 19 turnovers and shot 33.8% from the field.
Fayetteville State (1-0 overall) shot 47.8% in field goals and dished out 22 assists. The Broncos will travel to Barton College on Tuesday, November 13 for a 7:30 pm matchup.
