Final Stats

Charlotte, NC – The Fayetteville State University men’s basketball team advances in the 2017 CIAA Tournament after a 56-49 victory over the Southern Division top-seeded Shaw University on Thursday, February 23rd at the Spectrum Center. FSU improves to 12-15 overall and advances to the semifinal round for the second consecutive season.

Fayetteville State held the high powered Bears to their lowest scoring point total of the season. These two teams split during the regular season – each winning on their opponent’s floor.

Both teams struggled to produce points in the initial start of the contest. Shaw was able to get on the scoreboard first, when DeAngelo Stephens-Bell made two free throws at the 18:23 mark. There were four ties in the opening half. FSU grabbed a lead off a three-pointer from junior guard Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) with 11:52 on the clock.

The Broncos held an advantage for the reminder of the period. Shaw trailed 20-18 at the break. Senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC) had nine points and three rebounds at the half. Senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) and Gilmore chipped in three points each.

In the second half, Dawson became more aggressive with the ball. He finished the afternoon shooting an impressive 90% (9-10) from the free throw line. The Broncos had a total team effort to get the win. Only five players scored, but four had double figures.

FSU maintained their lead for the entirety of the second half. The Broncos scored 13 points off Shaw turnovers. Shaw lost the rebounding battle 40-29 and was outscored 36-31 in the second half. Dawson was clutch from the foul line in the final minute; connecting on 6-of-6 coming down the final stretch.



Dawson produced a game-high 17 points, along with six rebounds and two steals. Tyson ended the evening with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore forward William Tibbs (Winston-Salem, NC) had a full stat line of 12 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Gilmore concluded the contest with 11 points and three rebounds.

Shaw was paced by DeAngelo Stephens-Bell who finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Benji Bell added 11 points and four rebounds.

Fayetteville State advances to play the winner of No. 3 Southern Winston-Salem State University and No. 2 Northern Virginia State University. The semifinal clash will be played on Friday, February 24th at 9:00 p.m. in the Spectrum Center.
